The Character
Name: Knoll
Canon: Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones
Canon Point: Postgame, before the rebuilding of Grado is truly underway
Age: Not known in-canon beyond "Adult". We'll say 30
History: Your very first interaction with Knoll when you recruit him in chapter 14 of Ephraim's route through the game is finding him locked up in the dungeons beneath the castle of Grado's capital city. He thinks that Ephraim and his company are his executioners at first, and that his execution has been moved ahead of schedule, and does nothing to try and change that fate at first, though he quickly recognizes that they aren't Grado soldiers. He was one of the royal mages, and prior to being branded a traitor and scheduled for execution, he was one of the top researchers in magical matters. He worked alongside the crown prince of Grado, Lyon, to uncover the power of the Sacred Stones and study the applications of ancient dark magic in bettering the lives of the people the prince would one day rule.

Their research ultimately resulted in the freeing of the great evil that once threatened their world, the Demon King, through the corruption and possession of Prince Lyon. When Lyon's father died, he was overtaken with grief, and threw himself into his research, skipping meals and foregoing sleep for extended periods of time in the hope of tapping into the power of Grado's Sacred Stone- also called the Fire Emblem- which housed the dark one's soul. Knoll bore witness to the eventual "resurrection" of Lyon's father, Emperor Vigarde, as a soulless puppet capable only obeying Lyon's- now in truth the Demon King in Lyon's body- will.

Knoll believed in Prince Lyon at the time, and thought it a miracle at first, but as time went on, he became frightened of the prince, knowing him to be somehow... Transformed. His words.

After the events of the game he returns to Grado- as do Duessel and Natasha- to aid in the rebuilding, and save as many lives as possible in the disaster Prince Lyon foresaw with the power of dark magic in five years time- and after five years, as Grado becomes the place Lyon envisioned, he simply disappears, never to be heard from again. (Though this canon point is before his disappearance)

Personality: Knoll is a man who carries the weight of what some might describe as "a colossal magical fuckup of cataclysmic proportions". The knowledge he holds and the loss of everything he held dear in life have deeply affected him. He's become softspoken, and withdrawn- reticent with the knowledge he holds, reluctant to even tell people who deserve to know what's happened unless pressed, because what he knows might hurt them. The guilt, grief, and depression run quite deep, too- it's revealed in Duessel's A rank support that Knoll believes it might be best if he had just been executed in the capital, or if he fell in battle.

His speech is laden with quiet pauses, and a lack of excitement or other strong emotion. The only time in the entire game- outside of flashbacks to the time before Prince Lyon's corruption became evident- his speech is appended with an exclamation mark is during his support conversations with the mage Lute, and she's in the process of actively attacking him, at the time. Even when he's being what he considers "sharp" with people (in Natasha's early support conversations), he never raises his voice.

Knoll is, and always was, a kindhearted individual. Part of the reason the failures of Grado weigh so heavily on him is that he well and truly believed in Prince Lyon, and the vision he held for a better future. He studied ancient dark magic with Lyon to better the lives of the people of Grado, and perhaps the rest of the world.

It's through the same support conversations over their journey, bonding with Natasha and Duessel, that Knoll finally finds some measure of resolve and will to live again- in their own ways, both fellow citizens of Grado have also lost everything, and they guide Knoll to the realization that though Prince Lyon is as good as dead, his dream doesn't need to follow him. He's determined to see the late prince's dream for the future realized- a better Grado, a peaceful, prosperous empire. And he was willing to go to the ends of the earth and fight the ancient evil- the Demon King himself- to make it happen.
